Who we are
Ambleside was launched in 1999 as a nonprofit organization committed to setting the standard for practice in
Charlotte Mason education and establishing a resource and seedbed for educators and
schools. Our long-term goal is to create a global Ambleside community of schools united in
the practice of Ambleside education.
Ambleside School of Fredericksburg provides on-site training for teachers and parents from all over the world in the philosophy and practice of Ambleside Charlotte
Mason education at our model school in Fredericksburg.
Ambleside provides a broad and varied curriculum of
inspirational and disciplinary subjects, through direct encounter with literary living
books and living art, music, science, mathematics, geography, language, nature, and
handwork.
We offer small classes, minimal homework in the elementary school, and noon dismissal for
lower primary grades. No standardized tests or letter grades are used. Our main
pedagogical method is written or oral narration.
Twice yearly essay exam periods are an important educational tool at Ambleside. An
opportunity for students to bring forth and show what knowledge they have attained, exam
time is a call to synthesize and summarize, master and make sense of main ideas and facts,
while developing the child's competence in clear thinking and verbal expression.
At Ambleside, all children participate in the broad curriculum-all children calculate,
solve, attend, explore, ponder, recite, paint, and sing. We strive to offer students the
richest materials along with our highest expectations of what they can accomplish. We
expect every student to learn and grow to full potential as a person, born in the image of
God, into a vast inheritance.
Ambleside School admits students of any race, color and national or ethnic origin.
